Why Candy Corn Is as Controversial as It Is American

Halloween is a time for all things spooky, but it can also be quite divisive. On one side, we have the group of people who love candy corn. On the other side, we have people who hate the stuff.

Candy corn is one of those rare seasonal treats that’s become associated with a specific holiday. Much like the Christmas candy cane or Easter jelly bean, no one company can claim ownership of candy corn. While Brach’s might be the most notable name, you can find store-brand variations that have all of the same qualities. Depending on who you ask: candy corn has a distinct sweetness or tastes like nothing, it’s uniquely smooth or Satan’s earwax, and it’s a decorative sugary marvel or it’s sugar in its worst form.

It’s hard to find a candy quite as controversial as candy corn. Likely, this is the reason it’s on so many lists of the worst Halloween candies. Not because there aren’t people who love it, but because it’s so hated. Americans are able to spend 11 months each year ignoring the debate on candy corn. When October comes around, the candy corn war reignites.
